Long-Term Psychotherapy

I offer long-term psychotherapy for adults in Melbourne.

Long-term psychotherapy describes the way I work rather than a single technique or time-limited treatment. It is a depth-oriented, relational approach that supports understanding and change in long-standing emotional, relational, and interpersonal patterns as they unfold over time.

This way of working allows space for complexity, while remaining attentive to what feels most important in the moment.

What This Way of Working Involves

Long-term psychotherapy involves meeting regularly (weekly or fortnightly) over time, with sessions shaped by your experiences and what emerges in the therapeutic process. Rather than following a rigid agenda, the work develops through careful attention to recurring themes, emotional responses, and relational patterns.

The focus of therapy is not fixed, but it is held — returning to what matters, and allowing understanding to deepen gradually.

Why Time and the Therapeutic Relationship Matter

Many emotional and relational patterns take shape within relationships and across time. Working long-term allows these patterns to be noticed as they arise and explored within a safe and consistent therapeutic relationship.

Change often comes through this ongoing process of recognition, reflection, and emotional experience, rather than through quick solutions. This approach values depth, patience and emotional honesty, recognising that meaningful change often unfolds gradually.

What You Can Expect From Therapy

This approach involves active engagement and emotional work, alongside space for reflection and thoughtfulness. Therapy may feel exploratory at times, but it remains grounded in attention, care, and a shared commitment to understanding

what keeps difficulties in place. Over time, people often experience greater emotional flexibility, self-understanding, and changes in how they relate to themselves and others.

How Schema Therapy and EMDR Fit In

Schema Therapy and EMDR are integrated within a longer-term psychotherapy process. Schema Therapy supports work with long-standing patterns, while EMDR can assist in processing distressing or traumatic experiences. These approaches are used responsively and thoughtfully, guided by what is emerging in the therapy rather than applied in a fixed way.

.

Is This Approach Right for You?

This way of working may suit people who are curious about themselves, open to reflection, and interested in understanding long-standing patterns. It may be less suited to those seeking brief, highly structured, or primarily solution-focused therapy. Discussing this openly is an important part of the initial appointment.
