EMDR Therapy: Trauma and distressing experiences within longer-term psychotherapy

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based approach used to support the processing of distressing or traumatic experiences that continue to have an emotional impact.

Many people find EMDR helpful when past experiences feel “stuck” in the present, particularly when emotional or physical reactions are difficult to shift through reflection alone.

How EMDR is used in my work

In my practice, EMDR is integrated within a longer-term relational psychotherapy approach. Rather than functioning as a standalone treatment, it is used when appropriate to support the processing of specific experiences within a broader therapeutic process.  The focus remains on how these experiences relate to ongoing emotional and relational patterns, both in daily life and within the therapeutic relationship..

What the process involves

EMDR is introduced carefully and only when there is sufficient stability and readiness.

Early work focuses on understanding your history, establishing safety, and building internal resources. If appropriate, later work may involve processing specific experiences that continue to carry emotional intensity, at a pace that feels manageable.

The emphasis is always on ensuring the process remains grounded, contained, and responsive to your needs.

What it is suited to

EMDR may be helpful where there are:

  • distressing or intrusive memories
  • trauma or adverse life experiences
  • emotional reactivity linked to past events
  • triggers that feel difficult to manage in the present
  • experiences that remain emotionally “present”

It is particularly useful when experiences continue to affect daily emotional regulation or relational life.

Integration with psychotherapy

EMDR can be used as part of a broader psychotherapy process alongside relational and schema-informed work. For some people, it is used selectively for specific experiences; for others it supports longer-term exploration of emotional and relational patterns.

The approach is always guided by clinical judgement and what feels most appropriate over time.
